Propylene glycol is a multifunctional cosmetic ingredient widely used in skincare and haircare products. It is valued for its moisturizing and solvent properties, helping improve product performance, texture, and application.

In skincare products, propylene glycol helps attract and retain moisture, leaving the skin feeling softer and smoother. It also promotes the even distribution of active ingredients within formulations and helps them come into contact with the skin more effectively. For this reason, propylene glycol is commonly used in creams, lotions, serums, and toners.

In haircare products, propylene glycol helps maintain moisture balance, improves product spreadability, and supports the even distribution of active ingredients. It is also widely used as a solvent in cosmetic formulations, helping blend ingredients and create more stable products.

Technical Information and Usage Guidelines

  • Solubility: fully soluble in water, alcohol, and many organic solvents. Easily compatible with most cosmetic ingredients.
  • Applications: suitable for creams, lotions, serums, toners, shampoos, conditioners, sprays, and other skincare and haircare formulations.
  • Recommended usage rate: 1–10% in moisturizing and conditioning products; higher concentrations may be used in specific formulations as a solvent.
  • Incorporation: can be added to the water phase or during the cooling phase. Commonly used to dissolve active ingredients, extracts, fragrance oils, and preservatives.
  • pH range: stable across a wide pH range, making it suitable for various cosmetic formulations.
  • Key difference: compared to D-panthenol and urea, the primary role of propylene glycol is moisture retention and dissolving other ingredients, helping improve their distribution and performance within a formulation.
  • Note: a small amount is sufficient for most cosmetic products. Very high concentrations may cause irritation on sensitive skin.
